Waistbands either dig in or roll down.
A wide soft band that sits flat and stays flat.
The real problem
You knew about the tiredness. Somebody mentioned the crying. Nobody sat you down and said that weeks after the birth you would still look pregnant, and that it would catch you every time you passed a mirror. Your maternity clothes feel like going backwards. Your old jeans are not a conversation you want to have yet. So it is the same two things on rotation, washed and worn and washed again. And you are dressing around it, which takes a surprising amount of thinking for someone who has not slept.

You dress around your middle every morning.
You put them on and stop thinking about it.
Maternity clothes that feel like the wrong stage.
Something for the body you have this morning.
Two things on rotation.
A pair you can wear under everything else you own.
Somebody will ask how you are getting on. Somebody else will mention that their sister was back in her jeans by now. There is a whole industry built on the idea that there is a version of you to get back to, and a date by which you should have reached her. There is not. You are allowed to want clothes that fit the body you have this morning, without that being step one of a plan to have a different one. That is all this is. A pair that fits now.

Whenever they feel comfortable. There is no right week. If you have had a caesarean, wait until the band sits above your scar without pressing on it, and if anything feels sore, stop wearing them and speak to your midwife.
Go by the centimetre/inches measurements rather than the size you wore before. Your measurements will keep changing for a while, so if you are between two sizes, take the larger one.
They hold and they smooth. They are not shapewear and they will not reshape you, which is deliberate. Anything tight enough to do that is not something you want to wear all day in the first few months.
Cold wash, dry flat. Warm water and a tumble dryer are what make stretch fabric lose its shape at the knee.
